Vintage PARKER Duofold Vacumatic fountain pen, USA 1940-Speedline Duovac-14K nib
Offered for your consideration is a vintage PARKER Duofold Vacumatic fountain pen, USA-manufactured in 1940. PARKER had retired the venerable button-fill Duofold in favor of the Vacuum-Filler-later Vacumatic-pens in 1933, and then released an economy button-filler Duofold in 1939 that proved unpopular. In 1940, it was replaced by this up-line Duofold with Vacumatic filler, popularly known as the Duovac today. So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this collectible PARKER Duofold should be yours. The pictured PARKER Duofold features a super attractive celluloid cap and barrel with vertical stripes, alternating black and silver/fuchsia (dark pink), with gold plated clip and trim. The colored lines are actually translucent, allowing fill level to be visible if held up to a light! And, I believe that since this pen has two cap bands and no diamond on the clip that it might be the Duovac Junior, though it is marked simply Duofold. This PARKER Duofold is in clean, very good cosmetic shape. Long with cap in place, 5? ” with cap posted atop, and ½” at center widest. The cap and barrel are in great shape with no chips, cracks, or notable scratches, just a few tiny marks and some tarnish to the gold-plated parts from the years. Plus, the clip rests well on the cap with no gap. In addition, the cap’s end jewel is in great shape. Plus, the cap screws to the barrel securely, and so does the filler’s blind cap. This pen was built to last by American craftsmen, and last it surely has. Overall, it’s very nicely preserved. What’s more, the solid 14K gold nib is in nice shape, but the tines and feed are slightly misaligned requiring simple adjustments. It looks to be fine point but is not visibly marked for size, just the number 18 which I unsuccessfully contemplated the meaning. The metal Speedline Vacumatic plunger has smooth action as well, so I was initially optimistic that this might be a writer from the get-go. So, I gave the pen a thorough rinsing in cool water to free much of the decades-old residual ink from the nib, feed, and cap. However, the pen is not drawing water, so ink would be the same. It appears that it needs servicing to the diaphragm and/or seals which is the norm for most Vacumatics that sat idle for decades like this one. Once sorted out by a knowledgeable collector or their pen shop, this uncommon PARKER Duovac should be a great writer! As pictured and described, this PARKER Duofold Vacumatic fountain pen is offered at a competitive price.
